Overview
In order to safely handle a vehicle in winter weather, drivers must be able to assess road conditions, predict how the vehicle will react in different situations and conditions, and know what actions to take to keep it under control. In this web based safety training course, the learner is presented with techniques they need to know to be safe winter drivers, including common driving mistakes that can lead to loss of control. This course should be included in every employee safety training program.
Audience
All drivers.
Topics
The course presents interactive instruction covering the following topical areas:
-
Laws of Physics

This course will measure mastery on each of the following performance objectives:
- Apply the laws of physics to a vehicle.
- Explain a stationary vehicle's weight distribution.
- Describe the vehicle weight transfer caused by acceleration.
- Select the wheels that get more weight load shifted on them during a change in direction.
- Analyze the weight shift during a rapid deceleration.
- Use traction to drive safely in winter.
- Define traction.
- List items that reduce traction when driving.
- Select the proper action to take if the vehicle is wedged in the snow.
- Use acceleration techniques for proper steering.
- Choose the proper action to take if the vehicle's back end begins to end.
- Define understeering.
- State the general cause of understeering.
- Define oversteering.
- State the general cause of oversteering.
- Recognize the best way to correct oversteering.
- Use vehicle brakes safely.
- Recall the need to get off the brake during a skid.
- Explain stab braking.
- Agree to never use stab braking with anti-lock brakes.
- Drive safely on slippery roads.
- List the two adjustments to make on slippery roads.
- Explain how to test traction on roads.
- Use special precautions when driving through danger zones.
- List winter danger zones.
- Calculate the proper speed limit when driving through curves in winter weather conditions.
- Recall the results if you accelerate while driving up a hill in winter weather.
- Choose the proper procedure to follow if the vehicle begins to slide when traveling downhill.
- Select indicators of severe weather.
- Agree to keep vehicle lights dim to see better in snow or fog.
- Safely prepare for winter driving.
- Agree to check tires before winter season begins.
- List items to check throughout the winter season.
- Agree that snow tires will increase the stopping distance of your vehicle on glare ice.
- Recall that wide tires are not recommended for snow.
- List items that should be kept within the car during the winter season.
