There are many workplace hazards to which our hands may be exposed, including heavy machinery, sharp tools, corrosive or irritating chemicals, and extreme heat or cold. Depending on our jobs, these hazards may be a daily threat. It is important for you to be able to recognize those dangers and understand how you can protect yourself against them. This course demonstrates why and how we must protect our hands from injury while at work.
The key to preventing hand injuries begins with maintaining an awareness of where your hands are at all times. You must avoid being distracted and must also be mindful of any hazards around you. This includes pinch points, which are created by a moving object that is near a fixed surface or by two moving objects that are close together. This course covers hazards such as pinch points, nip points, moving parts of equipment/machinery, and more.
You can protect your hands by wearing gloves, but you must know which kind of gloves are appropriate for the work you are performing. There are cut-resistant gloves, chemical gloves, and welding gloves to name a few, and each has its own appropriate usage.
