Bloodborne pathogens are disease causing organisms found in human blood. The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is among the most serious of bloodborne diseases, and it is believed more than one million people in the United States have been infected with HIV. In response to the spread of diseases transmitted through the blood, OSHA created the Bloodborne Pathogens Regulation in 1991. This safety training video explains how exposure to bloodborne pathogens occurs, and what you as a commercial or light industrial facility worker can do to protect yourself.
This course gives an overview of the Bloodborne Pathogens Regulation, which requires all facilities have an Exposure Control Plan explaining how the facility will comply with the OSHA regulation. The plan considers the employee's potential risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens and ways to minimize or eliminate exposure. It includes a Hepatitis B vaccination plan and procedures employees should follow in case an exposure occurs. Biohazard warning signs and labels are required on everything carrying contaminated materials, and employers must ensure employees are properly trained to handle them carefully. Furthermore, facilities are required to keep records of employee vaccinations, training, and exposures.
Watch this safety training course to learn how to protect yourself and your coworkers from bloodborne pathogens.
This course has been updated to include GHS container labels and Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for GHS compliance.
