Overview

Crane accidents have increased in recent years, causing OSHA to revise crane regulations. The new rules, explained in this Video On Demand, address ground conditions, crane assembly and disassembly, working around power lines and inspections. This training also explains proper hand signaling, work area controls, new operator and signal person certification requirements, and training and new limits on maintenance personnel. Verification of ground conditions for safe crane operation is covered.

The video focuses on boom crane operation, beginning with the importance of pre-use vehicle inspection. Crane operators are reminded to become familiar with the crane's safety devices such as bells and warning lights, horns, warning tag, as well as operational safety devices that monitor and control the crane's handling. Special attention is paid to hook inspection, including looking for stretched and twisted hooks. Incorporating into weight calculations the weight of the load, rigging, block and hook is stressed. Viewers learn how to position and level outriggers, rig the load, lift it, move and land the load safely. Communicating with clear and universally understood hand signals is stressed, and hand signals are demonstrated.

Cranes do the work no human can handle, and the power of the crane must be respected. This video explains the basics of safe crane operation to prevent property damage and personal injury or death. Knowing how to lift, move and land a load makes a construction job easier, and keeps workers and crane operators safe.
