Overview

In the United States more than 37,000 people die in motor vehicle crashes each year. Most accidents are caused by drivers who are under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Under the Federal Transportation Employee Testing Act, motor carriers are required to establish drug and alcohol testing programs.

Viewers of this health and safety course learn how the testing programs effect transportation employees, what the testing process includes, what happens if an employee tests positive, and how to get help for a drug or alcohol problem.

The Department of Transportation (DOT) requires all professional drivers, mechanics, and warehouse workers to be tested for drugs and alcohol. Drug tests are done by urinalysis, and alcohol tests are done by breath or saliva testing. Drug tests screen for substances such as marijuana, cocaine, opiates, and amphetamines.

Watch this course to learn about the importance of drug and alcohol testing in the transportation industry and the role it plays in keeping commercial drivers safe.
