Training Manager General Tab

Training Manager is a powerful course management program that allows you to tailor options and features to meet your needs. You will use this system to manage the day-to-day training operations and the training delivery process.

This page shows screen shots and feature descriptions from the Training Manager System's "General" screen.

This entry specifies which Runtime or Training Server System you are currently controlling. Manage any number of Runtime Systems whether they are single-user stand-alone systems or Training Server installations (LAN or Web) from your desktop. Enter the Windows path where the Runtime System is installed. The pull-down list contains all Runtime Systems previously accessed by Training Manager. Entries in Training Manager reflect the settings for the Runtime System identified here.

Include courses from these locations This is an important network feature. This entry contains the list of all Network locations where courses are installed. In this example, this Runtime System will search all three network locations. It will list the courses on each of the servers and make them all accessible to all users of this Runtime System.

Deliver courses to users from an unlimited number of drives or server locations. Enter the Windows UNC (Universal Naming Convention) paths for all folders containing courses. If courses are duplicated on more than one location, the system will serve the copy first encountered on this location list.

Use this capability to easily distribute courseware loads to underutilized file servers and network segments. You can also use this feature to share courseware libraries on multiple training servers.

Check this box if multiple Training Servers (Runtime Systems) share the courses in at least one courseware location included on this list. Checking this box allows this Runtime System to maintain "Courseware" folder settings independently from other Runtime Systems that are sharing these courses.

Performance PreferencesSelect the display size for Windows desktop users. This entry has no effect on browser player users. Choose the specific display dimensions 640 x 480 up to 1600 x 1200, or "Full Desktop") to cause the course display to always fill the user's entire screen. If users on older computers experience poor video playback performance, reducing the playback window size will often help. CD-ROM driveIf you are using a single-user Runtime System this entry must be set to correspond to the drive letter of the CD-ROM reader used to play courses. Use this entry to enable the printing of quiz results by the learners. Select "None" to disable user printing. Other settings allow you to cause the learner's quiz results to print automatically or only when requested by the learner. The time-out delay causes any training computer to reset to the log-on screen after a defined period of user inactivity. If this Runtime System controls learning lab workstations select a time-out setting appropriate for your installation. Time-out delay can be set to one to thirty minutes. If you are using screen-savers the time-out delay must be less than the screen-saver activation delay. Use the entries in this section and on the additional "Info" screen to identify this Runtime System and distinguish it from other Mastery Runtime Systems (Training Servers) installed on your network. Contact information should identify the local person responsible for this Training Server installation at the location specified.

Select the default language to be used by the Runtime System messages, the Course Listing, and learner orientation lesson. The "User" option allows each learner to select his or her language preference from the log-on sequence. Support for English, Spanish, French, and Flemmish is standard with all Mastery Runtime and Training Server Systems.

The Learner Controls section lets you specify whether learners are:

  • allowed to exit training and go to the Windows desktop, an important security feature
  • allowed to use the "Skip Lesson" option on the Control Bar
  • allowed to use the "Forward" and "Skip" option on the Control Bar
  • offered closed captions when closed caption files are available for a course
The Mastery Runtime System includes a Learner Satisfaction Survey that can be automatically administered at the completion of any course. To activate the survey, just select the option you want. The survey can be conducted only after a learner's first course, or it can be conducted after every course. Selecting "None" turns off the survey. You can use a touchscreen or mouse to control the courses. The standard learner sign-on screen asks the learner to enter a nine-character Learner ID. You can tailor the learner sign-on to ask for other identifiers with this button.

This button accesses the Advanced settings for the Runtime System. Advanced settings should only be changed on the advice of a Mastery Technical Support Representative.

Use question pools Some courses feature question pools (extra questions) from which quiz questions are randomly selected. Check this box if you want to enable question pool selection if a pool is available for the course.
