Overview

Operating a crane can be a hazardous job and presents danger to people and property. This Video On Demand focuses on hazard identification, avoidance and control for cranes. Nearly 45 percent of crane accidents are caused by contact with energized power lines. Other accidents are caused by crane overturns, falls and mechanical failures. This training video explores the causes of accidents, such as instability, lack of communication between crane operators and others are the crane site, lack of training and inadequate crane maintenance or inspection.

Viewers learn about the parts of cranes and the need for training to operate mobile, hydraulic, overhead, gantry and tower types of cranes. Ways to avoid injuries while working with cranes are explored. The video also explains the role of the “competent person” in inspecting cranes and determining when to take it out of service for repair or maintenance. Viewers are informed about rated load capacities, safe operating speeds and special hazard warnings operators must understand before working with a crane. It discusses load limiting factors and lifting principles, including center of gravity, leverage, stability and structural integrity. OSHA requirements and safety inspections are covered.

This training module also includes support documents viewers can review to gain a better understanding of the principles discussed. It concludes with an interactive quiz to ensure the primary learning points are understood.
