Overview

The maritime industry poses some obvious dangers; extreme conditions and complex machinery can all put you in harm’s way. You receive training for these larger and more visible threats, but there are invisible threats as well. You are exposed to bacteria on a daily basis, but what you might not realize is some of these germs can be deadly. With this On Demand training video, you will be introduced to Staphylococcus and Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus, more commonly known as Staph and MRSA. You will learn how to recognize infections caused by these bacteria, and you will learn how to prevent them from spreading in the first place.

A Staph infection may produce symptoms such as rash, bone inflammation, heart valve infection, and pneumonia. While antibiotics can treat most strains of Staph, one strain, MRSA, is resistant to antibiotics. MRSA usually begins innocuously as a bump or series of bumps on the skin, but if it is left untreated, it can cause very serious health problems, even death. It is imperative you understand both the methods of preventing an infection, as well as treating an infection should one occur.

These bacteria are fairly common, but there are also fairly common ways to combat them. You can wash your hands, clean and treat wounds properly, and maintain a safe and well-kept workspace. The preventive methods to keep MRSA under control work for other bacteria; if you learn the proper methods for treatment and prevention you can avoid sickness from other sources as well. Use this online safety training to acquire the information needed to prevent the spread of potentially deadly infections, thus keeping you and those around you safe.
