Overview

Improperly handled chemicals can cause illness, serious injuries, fatalities, and harm the environment. Workers have the right to know the hazards of chemicals used in the workplace, how to protect themselves, and where to get information about the chemicals. The Hazard Communication Standard, which uses the Globally Harmonized System or GHS, enforces the worker’s right to know about hazardous chemicals. This safety training course reviews the hazards of working with chemicals and where to find information on how to use chemicals safely.

This course explains the three types of hazards: physical, health, and environmental. Viewers are shown how Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and Safety Data Sheets (SDS) explain to safely use, store, and dispose of chemicals. The Fire Diamond labeling system is reviewed and includes health, flammability, reactivity, and other hazards, and rates hazards on a scale of from 0 - 4.

The course explains the GHS labeling format which includes the following elements: product name; pictograms that illustrate chemical hazards; danger or warning labels; hazard, precautionary, and first aid statements; hazard identifier information; and the supplier’s contact information.

Watch this safety training course to learn how to protect yourself, your coworkers, and the environment from the dangerous effects of chemicals.
